Ambicolored specimens of the flounder Paralichthys orbignyanus (Pleuronectiformes: Paralichthyidae) Neotropical Ichthyology

Two ambicolored specimens of Paralichthys orbignyanus were reported for the estuarine area of the arroyo Pando (Uruguay). One of the specimens showed an almost fully coloration on the blind side, excepting the cephalic region, while the other one was partially pigmented. This is the first record of ambicoloration in P.orbignyanus.

Single cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE or comet) assay allows quantification of DNA damage in individual cells and is an ideal tool for use within biological monitoring programmes. Comet assay can be used on a range of cell types including somatic, reproductive (gametes) or circulatory cells in many different species including both marine bivalves and flatfish. The assay can be employed with simple equipment available in most laboratories, is sensitive to environmentally relevant levels of DNA damage (Frenzilli and Lyons, 2009), accurately demonstrates a linear dose response to exposure (Collins et al., 1996), and can be adapted for use on most nucleated cell types. Bi-monthly otter trawl sampling programme using a stratified random design was carried out at Sepetiba Bay (22º54'-23º04'S; 43º34'-44º10'W), from August 1994 to July 1996, aiming to assess the flatfish species composition and their relative abundance. Digenean metacercariae parasites as natural tags of habitat use by 0-group common sole Solea solea in nearshore coastal areas: A case study in the embayed system of the Pertuis Charentais (Bay of Biscay, France) ArchiMer

This study focused on the spatio-temporal variation in the host-parasite system, 0-group sole-digenean metacercariae, in nearshore coastal areas at relatively small spatial scale. 0-group soles were sampled using a standard beam trawl in April, May, June, August and October 2005 at nine different sites in the Pertuis Charentais area (Bay of Biscay, France). Shellfish culture can lead to an accumulation of exopolysaccharides (EPS) over the surface of intertidal mudflats. EPS are rheologically active polymers that change water viscosity and water flow over the branchial basket of the juvenile flatfish that colonise intertidal mudflats. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of water EPS content on various aspects of the physiology and behaviour of the common sole Solea solea. Field studies revealed that water total EPS can be up to 15 mg l 1 in the field. Discards of the French trawler fleet operating in the Celtic Sea in 1997 were studied. Twenty-six trips, representing 0.8% of the total fishing effort, were sampled. This fleet consists of three métiers, benthic trawlers, demersal trawlers and Nephrops trawlers. The fleet discarded an estimated 30,000 tons of animals in 1997, while landing 63,000 tons. The total quantity discarded did not differ among métiers, but the species composition of discards did. Benthic trawlers discarded mainly by-catch species, whereas demersal and Nephrops trawlers discarded primarily their target species. Evaluation of different tags on survival, growth and stress response in the flatfish Senegalese sole ArchiMer

Internal electronic tagging is a major issue in flatfish species due to the small size of abdominal cavity. In this study, three tag types, referred to as Nonatec, nano and mini, were evaluated in three weight classes of Senegalese sole: small (0.3 g), middle (0.8 g) and large (2.0 g). Tags were injected from the blind side and fish were carefully handled to minimize sharp movements. Tag losses were 8% in the small size class, between 5.2 and 15.1% in the middle size class and 2–4% in the large size class. The mortality rates ranged between 2.0 and 15.0% with the lowest values in the large size class. ABSTRACT Despite being a diverse genus with a total of 53 species worldwide, Aseraggodes has only one species record confirmed in the Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP). In this short communication, we present the first record of the Herre’s sole, A. herrei, for Colombia, from two specimens observed at a depth of 24 m on the east side of Malpelo Island. Both individuals were camouflaged on coarse sand substrate. From Data to End-to-End Models: 15 Years of Research to Describe the Dynamics of Exploited Marine Ecosystems in the Eastern Channel ArchiMer

Considerable research has been conducted in the past 15 years around the Eastern English Channel ecosystem. Data collected since the 1970s on the biotic and abiotic compartments have been collated and mapped out in the mid-2000. This spatially explicit information formed a sound basis to improve knowledge on, and model, the functioning and dynamics of key ecosystem compartments, with a focus on flatfish species and fisheries and their interactions with other sectors of activity (aggregate extractions, maritime traffic). The more recent ongoing works are dedicated to the integration of those processes into several complementary end-to-end ecosystem models.

Genetic structure of the common sole (Solea solea) in the Bay of Biscay: Nurseries as units of selection? ArchiMer

Coastal and estuarine areas in the Bay of Biscay are essential nursery habitats for sole (Solea solea). Using three intronic markers, we investigated patterns of genetic differentiation among cohorts of juveniles (0+, 1+, sub-adults) inhabiting four major nurseries in the Vilaine and Loire river estuaries, the Pertuis d' Antioche strait, and the Gironde estuary. Genetic differentiation was not significant for the age 0- and 1-groups, but was among sub-adult samples (theta(WC) = 0.017; P = 0.031). Impact of warming on abundance and occurrence of flatfish populations in the Bay of Biscay (France) ArchiMer

The aim of the present study was to analyse the influence of warming on flatfish populations in the Bay of Biscay. 17 autumn cruises conducted from 1987 to 2006 over the whole shelf of the Bay of Biscay provided data for the abundance and occurrence of adults for twenty flatfish species. Trends in flatfish abundance were analysed with regard to geographic range of populations and interannual fluctuations in abundance were related to seawater temperature. Parasitic infection of sole Solea solea by Prosorhynchus spp. metacercariae (Digenea, Bucephalidae) in Atlantic nurseries under mussel cultivation influence ArchiMer

Cysts of metacercariae were obtained on 2 dates from juvenile sole Solea solea sea-sampled in an area of mussel cultivation (Pertuis Charentais, Bay of Biscay, France). An initial assessment of parasite genus and infestation level was based on 192 cysts extracted from 2 fish samples, taken in August (n = 20) and December 2000 (n = 14). Our results confirmed the sole as second intermediate host of bucephalid trematodes of the genus Prosorhynchus, which has not previously been noticed in Atlantic stocks. Sedentary behaviour establishment in 0-group common sole Solea solea: a laboratory video-tracking study ArchiMer

Spontaneous swimming activity of 0-group common sole (Solea solea) was evaluated using a video-tracking system under laboratory conditions. An experiment was conducted during two consecutive days on individuals sampled in June, July, September and November (2004) in a coastal nursery ground (Pertuis Charentais, Bay of Biscay, France).
